It’s 4:30 p.m. The GC needs a full 60-inch presentation set and a stack of color-coded coordination sheets before the courier cutoff. The Z6100 was built for exactly that moment — a wide, roll-fed color plotter meant to run all afternoon without someone babysitting the output tray.

Here’s the catch: this machine has been off HP’s price list for a long time. If you’re reading this page, you either already own one and want to keep it fed, or you found a used unit and you’re deciding whether it’s worth the floor space. Both are fair questions. Let’s answer them.

What it actually is

The Z6100 60-in is a pigment-ink, roll-fed wide-format printer from HP’s DesignJet Z-series. Sixty inches means you can output large presentation boards, site plans and full-bleed renderings without tiling. The pigment ink — the HP 91 family, with matching HP 91 printheads — was chosen for water resistance and fade life, which matters when a rendering sits in a lobby or a survey map lives in a field truck.

It handles the everyday AEC diet too: bond plots, matte-coated presentation stock, film. HP offered a deep media list for it, from HP Matte Film 610 mm x 38.1 m (24 in x 125 ft) to heavier display materials. The HP DesignJet 60-in Media Bin catches long prints so they don’t pool on the floor.

Where it fits — and where it doesn't

This is a color machine first. If your work is mostly monochrome D-size bid sets churned out by the hundred, a color pigment plotter is more machine — and more ink cost — than you need. Where the Z6100 earns its keep is mixed color-and-line work at full presentation width: renderings, GIS maps, coordination drawings, marketing boards.

Owning one now

Buy used with eyes open. The good news: it’s user-serviceable. The HP DesignJet User Maintenance Kit covers the wear parts, and the HP 91 printheads are replaceable without a technician. Networking runs through HP Jetdirect print servers like the newer family used — the HP Jetdirect 630n IPv6 Gigabit print server keeps it on a modern subnet.

The risk is parts. This is discontinued hardware. Ink and printhead availability for the HP 91 line is your real constraint — confirm supply before you commit, because a plotter you can’t feed is a table.

The Z6100 60-in was a solid color workhorse for AEC presentation and mapping work, and it can still be that if you already own one and can keep the HP 91 inks and printheads flowing. As a fresh purchase, treat it as a bridge — a used unit to hold a workflow together, not a decade-long plan. If you’re spending money to solve a 60-inch color problem going forward, price the Z6200 60-in or Z6800 60-in first. Bottom line: keep it running if you have it, but don’t build your next five years on a machine you can’t reorder.

Is the HP DesignJet Z6100 60-in still sold new?

No. It’s discontinued and no longer on HP’s price list, so any unit you find will be used or refurbished. The current 60-inch successor in the same family is the HP DesignJet Z6200 60-in.

What ink and printheads does it use?

It runs the HP 91 pigment ink and HP 91 printhead family. The printheads are user-replaceable, but confirm ongoing supply before committing to a used machine — feeding it is the real constraint on a discontinued model.

Can I service it myself?

Routine wear items are covered by the HP DesignJet User Maintenance Kit, and printhead swaps don’t require a technician. Deeper repairs on discontinued hardware are harder because parts availability is limited.

Is it a good machine for monochrome bid sets?

It can print them, but it’s a color pigment plotter at heart. If your work is mostly high-volume D-size line drawings, that’s more ink and more machine than the job needs.

What should I buy instead if I need this width new?

Look at the HP DesignJet Z6200 60-in as the direct successor, or the HP Z6800 60-in for higher color production volume. If 42 inches is enough, the HP DesignJet Z6100 42-in shares the same platform.

How do I get it on our network?

It connects through HP Jetdirect print servers; the HP Jetdirect 630n IPv6 Gigabit print server keeps it compatible with a current network. Confirm your IT team is comfortable supporting the print-server generation you’re given.
