Dietzgen 471 is a translucent drafting vellum made from a 100% cotton fibre base — 3.3 mil thick, 20 lb (75 gsm), matte, and deliberately low in opacity at 56% so light passes through the sheet. What it is best at is lasting. This is the stock you commit a drawing to when the intermediate has to be pulled from a flat file and reprinted years later.

The cotton base is what separates this from a bond. Dietzgen rates 471 for exceptional strength and durability through repeated handling, and states it will not yellow or fade with time or due to ozone exposure — the two failure modes that usually end an archived drawing.

Ink compatibility

471 carries Dietzgen’s BEST rating on four chemistries at once: toner, aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and HP PageWide. That breadth is the practical argument for it — the same vellum can go through a toner plotter, an aqueous inkjet plotter or a PageWide device without changing stock or re-profiling. Latex and UV inks are rated GOOD.

Working with it

At 56% opacity, 471 is meant to be seen through, which is the whole basis of using it as a reprographic intermediate. Its white is measurably warmer than a production bond: brightness 92 with a whiteness of 106, against 145 whiteness on Dietzgen’s 430 bond. Rolls run 11 to 36 inches wide on 3-inch cores, and cut sheets are available from 8.5 to 30 inches.
