What you should know

446 is a coated matte paper rather than a bond with a coating claim: it is coated on two sides (C2S) over a 100% virgin fibre base, 4 mil thick at 24 lb (90 gsm). Like the FIBERLOCK bonds in the same range it is aimed at static-head inkjet — the HP PageWide class of press — but with a proper coated surface underneath the ink rather than a treated uncoated one.

What 24LB Simple Inkjet Coated Matte Paper (C2S) (446) is used for

  • HP PageWide static-head production printing
  • Two-side coated colour drawings and documents
  • Engineering and CAD drawings needing richer blacks
  • Mixed toner / inkjet reprographic fleets

Coating both sides is what makes duplex work possible on a colour document, and it is also what keeps the sheet flat: an uncoated back behind a coated face is a curl mechanism. The vendor’s stated results for the surface are richer blacks and brighter colours while using less ink, with reduced curl and cockling and no loss of print speed or colour accuracy. The sheet measures 96 brightness and 95% opacity.

Ink compatibility

Three chemistries are rated BEST: aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and HP PageWide. Toner, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. That combination — aqueous and PageWide at the top, toner a step below — is the clearest signal of what this paper is: an inkjet colour stock for a production plotting room, not a toner-room substitute.

Working with it

Overlamination is not required; pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are compatible where prints need protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture. It is supplied in roll form only and in a narrow width range — 36 to 42 inches — on 2- or 3-inch cores. A 28 lb version of the same C2S construction is made at 4.5 mil where a heavier sheet is wanted.
