Somebody in your office cares about color. Maybe it’s the principal who wants a rendering to look right on the boardroom wall. Maybe it’s the landscape architect matching a planting plan to what the client actually approved. The Z3100ps GP was built for that person — a 44-inch (1118 mm) wide-format photo printer aimed at presentation-grade output, not the ninth revision of a plumbing riser.

It’s discontinued now. But plenty are still bolted to office floors, running bid boards and color site plans long after the warranty card got lost. If you’ve inherited one, or you’re eyeing a used unit, the question isn’t whether it prints beautifully. It’s whether the ink and printhead supply chain will keep it fed to your next deadline.

What it's actually good at

This is a graphics machine first. The HP 70 pigment inks and built-in spectrophotometer were the whole point — color that stays consistent print to print, and profiles you can trust across media. For an AEC shop that produces client-facing work, that matters.

  • Rendered elevations and presentation boards that need to match a screen proof.
  • Color-coded site and utility plans where hue actually carries meaning.
  • Photo-quality submittals on satin or matte stock — think competition boards.
  • Occasional canvas or display-film work when the marketing team asks nicely.

It handles a wide media range, from bond to HP Premium Instant-dry Satin and matte films. The spectrophotometer means you calibrate to the paper in the printer, not a guess.

Where it drags — and it will drag

Photo printers trade speed for quality. If your day is 40 monochrome D-size plots before a permit deadline, this machine is the wrong tool and it’ll tell you so around 4:15 p.m. A dedicated production plotter finishes that stack in a fraction of the time. The Z3100ps GP was never meant to be the bid-set workhorse.

The bigger issue today is age. HP 70 inks and printheads are still findable, but this is a discontinued platform — parts and dealer expertise thin out every year. A clogged printhead the morning of a submission is a real failure mode, and there’s no overnight replacement culture around a legacy machine.

If you're replacing it, look inside the family

The natural successor in the same line is the HP DesignJet Z3200ps 44-in — same photo-and-graphics mission, still current, and it keeps the spectrophotometer approach your color people already understand. If 44 inches is more than you need, the HP Z3200 24-in does the same job at a smaller footprint.

Shops that have drifted toward high-volume color production should weigh the HP DesignJet Z5200 44-in instead — more geared to running sets than nursing single showpieces. And if you want to see how the old and new sit side by side, compare the Z3100ps GP against the Z3200ps before you commit. Cross-shopping other brands? Buy or keep a Z3100ps GP for one reason: color you can stand behind on client-facing output. It still does that well. But it’s discontinued, it’s slow by design, and every year the HP 70 supply and service picture gets a little tighter. If color fidelity is central to your work and you can secure ink and printheads, it earns its floor space. If you’re chasing line-drawing volume, or you want a machine you can service in a hurry, move to the Z3200ps or a production model and don’t look back.

Is the HP Designjet Z3100ps GP still made?

No, it’s a discontinued model. Many remain in service across AEC offices, but it’s no longer a current product in the DesignJet line.

What inks and printheads does it use?

It runs the HP 70 pigment ink set with matching HP 70 printheads. Confirm current availability before committing to a used unit, since supply for legacy platforms thins over time.

Can it handle everyday bid and permit sets?

It can print them, but it’s a photo-graphics machine tuned for color quality over speed. For high-volume monochrome plotting, a production plotter is the far better fit.

What's the direct replacement if I need to upgrade?

Within the same family, the HP DesignJet Z3200ps 44-in is the natural successor for color-critical work, or the HP Z3200 24-in if you want a smaller footprint.
