KODAK Water-Resistant Scrim Banner is a scrim-reinforced vinyl at 16 mil and 450 gsm, built as a tear-resistant polyester fabric embedded between two white vinyl layers. That sandwich is what a scrim banner is: the woven fabric core carries the load, and the vinyl faces carry the image and keep water out. Kodak states it is designed to create high-impact, cost-effective graphics that stand up to the test of time.

High-volume banner work is Kodak’s own framing and it describes a specific kind of shop — one running banner as a repeat line rather than an occasional job. The scrim core is what makes that viable outdoors: a grommeted banner in wind fails at the grommet first, and the embedded fabric is what stops the tear from propagating.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye and aqueous pigment inks are each rated BEST. That is worth flagging, because scrim banner is a category where solvent stock predominates — this material puts outdoor banner work within reach of an aqueous plotter. Latex, solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not rated for it, so a solvent shop should specify a different banner.

Working with it

Kodak’s laminate guidance carries one restriction worth respecting: pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates with UV inhibitors can be applied to increase fade and abrasion resistance, but polyester or other base-material laminates are not recommended on this banner. Allow the image to dry for 24 hours before laminating. Opacity is 95% and whiteness 130 CIE. Rolls run 24 to 60 inches wide on 2-inch cores.
