What you should know

Key takeaways

  • Single-pass PageWide XL design keeps mixed-size plan sets moving without a carriage slowing down for width.
  • Full multifunction: color scanning and copying on CIS, with scan lengths up to 708.7" (18 m) for long civil profiles.
  • Rated 1200 x 1200 DPI and 0.1% line accuracy suit dimensional drawings and small-text legibility.
  • A 500 GB internal HDD and 7874" (200 m) max roll cut re-rips and reloads during heavy runs.
  • Discontinued model โ€” the current in-family choices are the HP F40 and step-up HP F60.
  • HP dynamic security is active, so plan on genuine HP 843C ink and the HP 841 printhead.

It’s 4:15 p.m. The permit set is due at five, the courier is idling out front, and someone just dropped a 60-page D-size bid set on the print-room operator with the words “color-coded, collated, don’t jam it.” This is the machine built for exactly that moment. The HP 4100 is a PageWide XL โ€” a single-pass inkjet plotter, meaning the printhead spans the full page width and the paper moves under it instead of a carriage sweeping back and forth.

That architecture is the whole point. No carriage means the sheet doesn’t slow down for width, so a fat mixed-size plan set comes off the top stacker fast and in order. If your day is measured in deadlines rather than single presentation boards, keep reading.

What it actually is

Four ink cartridges โ€” the HP 843C 400-ml Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow PageWide XL cartridges โ€” feed eight fixed printheads across the page. Servicing runs through the HP 841 printhead. Rated resolution is 1200 x 1200 DPI, and HP quotes line accuracy of 0.1%, which matters when a surveyor’s scaled plat has to measure true off the sheet.

It’s a full multifunction unit: color scanning and color copying on CIS technology, up to a 708.7″ (18 m) scan length for long civil profiles. An 8″ touchscreen drives it, there’s a 500 GB internal HDD for reprint queues, and it speaks HP-GL/2, TIFF and JPEG. Note what’s missing: no native PDF listed in the page languages, so PDF-heavy shops will lean on a driver or RIP to feed it.

Where it earns its floor space

This is a shared-department machine. It’s a big unit โ€” 77.2″ wide, 34″ deep, 948 lbs โ€” so it isn’t wedging into a two-person studio corner. Put it where volume justifies it and it pays for itself in operator minutes.

  • High-volume engineering departments pushing daily bid and permit sets โ€” the top stacker and single-pass speed keep collated output moving.
  • Construction offices and GCs that need one box for plotting, scanning as-builts and color copying redlines.
  • Central reprographics rooms where the 200 m roll and 500 GB reprint store cut down on reloads and re-rips.
  • Surveyors and civil teams running long profiles up to 18 m on the scanner.

Quiet, too โ€” HP rates it at 7.6 dB while printing โ€” and it idles at 1 W in sleep, ENERGY STAR listed.

The top stacker: collated D-size sets land here face-down and in order, which is the difference between one trip to the courier and three.

Where it's the wrong tool

Two honest caveats. First, this is a discontinued PageWide XL โ€” the current in-family successors are the HP F40 and the step-up HP F60; the earlier HP F70 is also off the current lineup. If you’re buying new, buy from the F-series. The 4100 makes sense as an installed-base or refurbished workhorse where you already know the service story.

Second, note HP dynamic security is active โ€” third-party ink is a gamble, so budget for genuine HP 843C cartridges. And for a small firm plotting a few boards a week, this is far too much machine. A single-roll 36-in unit like the Canon iPF770 fits that bench better. Compare the field before you commit floor space.

The read

The 4100 was built to swallow deadline-day volume: single-pass speed, a 200 m roll, a top stacker that collates, and full scan-and-copy in one box. As a used or already-installed department machine, it still does that job well. But it’s discontinued and it runs dynamic security, so go in with your ink supply and service coverage sorted. Buying new today? Start with the F40 instead. Bottom line: right machine for a busy print room that already owns one โ€” wrong machine to buy new off the shelf.

Questions

Straight answers

Is the HP 4100 still a current product?

No. It’s a legacy PageWide XL. For a new purchase, the current in-family options are the HP F40 and the step-up HP F60; it remains a sensible choice as an installed or refurbished department unit.

What inks and printheads does it use?

It runs the HP 843C 400-ml PageWide XL cartridges in Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, serviced by the HP 841 printhead. Note that HP dynamic security is enabled, so third-party ink is risky.

Can it handle PDF bid sets directly?

Its listed page description languages are HP-GL/2, TIFF and JPEG โ€” PDF isn’t native, so PDF-heavy workflows will submit through the print driver or a RIP rather than dropping files straight onto the machine.

Does it scan and copy as well as plot?

Yes. It offers color scanning and color copying using CIS technology at up to 1200 x 1200 DPI optical, with a maximum scan length of 708.7″ (18 m) for long profiles and as-builts.

How big is it and will it fit our print room?

It’s 77.2″ wide, 34″ deep and weighs 948 lbs, so it needs a dedicated department footprint โ€” not a studio corner. It runs at a quiet 7.6 dB while printing and draws about 400 W typical, 1 W in sleep.

Is it too much machine for a small studio?

Likely, yes. A firm plotting a handful of boards a week is better served by a single-roll 36-in unit such as the Canon iPF770. The 4100’s value shows up when daily bid, permit and as-built volume justifies its speed and stacker.
