What you should know

Dietzgen 434 is a 21 lb (75 gsm) bond, 4 mil thick and matte, carrying a surface treatment Dietzgen calls FIBERLOCK. It is not a general-purpose bond that happens to work on inkjet. It was engineered for one thing: static-head inkjet presses, the HP PageWide class of machine, where the print head does not traverse and the paper moves fast underneath it.

What Dietzgen Fiberlock 21LB Treated Bond Paper (434) is used for

  • HP PageWide static-head production plotting
  • Engineering and CAD drawings
  • Runs where curl and cockling must be minimised
  • Mixed toner / inkjet reprographic fleets

Dietzgen’s claims for the treatment are unusually concrete: improved ink adhesion, print quality, line acuity and image clarity specifically with static-head technology; richer blacks and brighter colours while using less ink; and reduced curl and cockling without giving up print speed or colour accuracy. Curl and cockling are the practical problem on a fast static-head machine — a sheet that ripples as it takes ink is a sheet that jams or scuffs, and it gets worse as the run gets longer.

Ink compatibility

HP PageWide is rated BEST, which is exactly what the product is for. Toner, aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. Note the shape of that: unlike Dietzgen’s standard engineering bonds, toner here is GOOD rather than BEST. This is a roll bought for a PageWide fleet, not a compromise stock for a toner room.

Working with it

The sheet measures 92 brightness and 88% opacity, so treat it as single-sided. Overlamination is not required; pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are compatible where a print needs protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture. It is supplied in roll form only, 15 to 40 inches wide, on 3-inch cores. Dietzgen also makes a heavier 24 lb FIBERLOCK bond for shops that want more body under the same treatment.
