Dietzgen 34849 is a 4-mil clear polyester film carrying an optically clear inkjet coating, with one converting detail that decides whether it works in your machine at all: it is supplied with a removable side stripe. Many HP and other wide-format printers look for the media edge before they will start a job, and a fully transparent film gives them nothing to find. The stripe solves that, then peels away.

Clarity is the whole point of a clear film, and it is also the property most easily lost, because any coating capable of holding ink tends to fog the base underneath it. Dietzgen’s stated design goal for this coating is print performance that does not come at the cost of the film’s transparency — which is exactly what a colour key needs, since the sheet is going to be laid over another image and read through.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye ink is rated BEST. Aqueous pigment and UV inks are each rated GOOD. Toner, HP PageWide and latex have no rating on file for this film; Dietzgen makes a separate clear film for xerographic and toner work.

Working with it

The finishing guidance is the standard Dietzgen film instruction, and it matters more on clear stock where any flaw shows: allow inkjet prints to dry completely before rolling, laminating or cutting, and use a sharp blade so that ink and toner do not flake along the edge. The base is dimensionally stable, which is what keeps registration honest when an overlay has to line up with the drawing underneath it. Rolls run 24 to 42 inches wide on 2-inch cores.
