What you should know

Dietzgen 130444 is a 4-mil polyester (PET) film, matte-coated on both faces and sold as the economy grade in Dietzgen’s inkjet film range. The case for film over paper is physical: it is tear resistant, water resistant and dimensionally stable, so a drawing printed on it survives handling and site conditions that would finish a bond print.

Opacity is 39%, so light passes through the sheet and it works as a translucent intermediate as well as a finished print. Dietzgen adds that 130444 will not yellow or fade with time or due to ozone exposure and that the PET base is dimensionally stable — those two claims together are what move it from durable field copy to archival original. At 4 mil it is a full mil thicker than the 3-mil double-matte inkjet film in the same family, which is the difference you feel when a drawing is handled repeatedly.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye ink is rated BEST and aqueous pigment ink GOOD. HP PageWide, latex and UV inks are each rated COMPATIBLE — they will run on the film, but the coating is not tuned for them. Toner is not a rated chemistry here; Dietzgen builds separate double-matte drafting films for toner and large-document-copier work.

Working with it

Film asks for more patience at finishing than paper does. Dietzgen’s instruction is to allow inkjet prints to dry completely before rolling, laminating or cutting, and to use a sharp blade so that ink and toner do not flake along the cut edge. It is supplied in roll form only, 30 to 42 inches wide, on 2- or 3-inch cores.
