What you should know

Dietzgen 440 is the heaviest sheet in Dietzgen’s uncoated engineering-bond range: 40 lb (150 gsm), 7.5 mil thick, matte, with a smooth bright-white surface. It measures 96 brightness, 145 whiteness and 97% opacity — effectively an opaque sheet, and roughly twice the caliper of the 20 lb bond that everyday plotting runs on.

At this weight the paper stops behaving like a plot and starts behaving like a board. It stands up on its own when pinned or held, it resists creasing in transit, and at 97% opacity it shows nothing through from the sheet behind. Those are display and presentation properties, which is why a 40 lb bond usually gets specified for the copy that leaves the office rather than the ten that stay in it. It still takes pen and pencil for markup and still runs through common stapling and binding equipment.

Ink compatibility

Toner and HP PageWide are both rated BEST; aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. It is an uncoated bond, so the ceiling on photographic colour is set by the surface rather than by the weight — for image-led work Dietzgen’s coated matte papers are the range to look at.

Working with it

Check the feed path before committing to a 40 lb roll: 7.5 mil is a lot of caliper for a plotter designed around 4-mil bond, and tight media paths do not always take it. Overlamination is not required, though pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are compatible where a print needs protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture. Rolls run 17 to 42 inches wide on 3-inch cores, and 12-inch cut sheets are available.
