ABAQA 8 Mil Gloss Photo Paper is a resin-coated photo paper at 8 mil and 190 gsm with a gloss finish. Resin-coated construction is what makes a print behave photographically rather than like a heavy coated paper — the image sits on a sealed base instead of soaking into fibre. ABAQA describes this bright white production stock as offering a wide colour gamut, excellent contrast and the ability to hold sharp detail.

Proofing sits first on ABAQA’s ideal-application list, and it is the demanding one. A proofing stock has to be consistent roll to roll, because everything downstream is judged against it. The 143 CIE whiteness and 95% opacity give a stable, near-opaque white ground for that work.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST — the full aqueous photo-plotter category plus latex machines. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not among its rated chemistries; ABAQA builds separate PE-based solvent photo papers for those presses.

Working with it

Gloss shows handling marks more readily than satin, which is why ABAQA’s finishing note matters here: pressure-sensitive or thermal laminates can be applied to increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image, and the image should dry for 24 hours before laminating. Rolls run 24 to 42 inches wide on 2-inch cores. If you need this same 190 gsm resin-coated base wider or in satin, ABAQA’s 8 Mil Satin Photo Paper covers 17 to 60 inches on both 2- and 3-inch cores.
