What you should know

ABAQA 5 Mil Water-Resistant Self-Adhesive Vinyl is a calendered adhesive-backed vinyl at 5 mil, matte-faced, with a solvent acrylic adhesive. This is the narrow-width listing — 24 to 42 inches — of the same material stocked as a 60-inch roll under a separate line. ABAQA states the white point is what lets bright, colourful photographs print on a durable, weather-resistant surface.

These narrower widths suit the point-of-sale half of that list. Retail decals, door and window graphics and shelf signage rarely need 60 inches, and cutting them from a 60-inch roll wastes vinyl on every job. Buying the width you print is the cheaper discipline.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable are not rated for this vinyl. Note that the adhesive is a solvent acrylic — that describes the glue chemistry, not the printing chemistry, and the two are easy to conflate when scanning a datasheet.

Working with it

ABAQA publishes a real outdoor figure rather than a vague claim: graphics on this material last up to eight months outdoors with no lamination, and up to two years outdoors when laminated. Plan the campaign against those two numbers. Lamination is otherwise optional — pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image and can change the gloss level, and the image should be allowed to dry for 24 hours first. Measured optics are 97 brightness, 90% opacity and 120 CIE whiteness. Rolls are supplied on 2- or 3-inch cores.
