What you should know

ABAQA 380g Premium Matte Poly/Cotton Canvas is the heavier of ABAQA’s two matte poly/cotton canvases — 65% polyester, 35% cotton, 2-over-1 weave, 380 gsm at 18 mil. The construction is shared with the 350 gsm version; what changes is the base itself, which ABAQA describes as high quality rather than lightweight, and the measured result of that change shows in the numbers.

The matte, water-resistant coating is matched to that base to deliver a wide colour gamut and durable photo-quality images. In practice the heavier base is the one to specify for stretched work and for anything that will be handled repeatedly on a trade circuit; the lighter 350 gsm canvas is easier to roll and ship.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable are not rated for this canvas. If your canvas work runs on a solvent or UV press, this is not the roll.

Working with it

The two numbers that separate this from the 350 gsm canvas are worth knowing before you choose. Opacity is 99.3% against 98.2%, so it is effectively total — nothing reads through a stretched frame. Whiteness is 129.14 CIE against 122.36, a measurably brighter, less warm ground, which shows most in high-key images and clean whites. ABAQA states that no post-processing or finishing is required. Rolls run 36 to 44 inches wide on 2-inch cores, a narrower band than the widest display stocks, so plan large pieces around the 44-inch ceiling.
