Dietzgen 791 is an 8-mil, 200 gsm satin photo paper on a premium resin-coated base, with a microporous instant-dry coating. Satin is the middle finish between gloss and matte: less reflection than a gloss sheet, more depth in the shadows than a matte one, which is why it is the default choice for prints that will be viewed under uncontrolled lighting. Brightness measures 98 and opacity 96%.

The instant-dry coating is the production argument. Prints come off the printer ready to cut, stack and sleeve, which is what makes a satin photo roll practical for volume work — portfolio runs, proof sets, event prints — rather than for one framed piece at a time. The resin-coated base keeps the sheet flat under a heavy ink load and stops the fibre absorbing the image.
Ink compatibility
Aqueous dye and aqueous pigment are both rated BEST. HP PageWide, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. Toner has no rating on file. In practice this is an aqueous photo paper, which is what a satin resin-coated stock at this weight is normally bought to be.
Working with it
Dietzgen states that the coating provides ink adhesion, print quality, line acuity and image clarity across multiple print technologies without sacrificing print speed or colour accuracy. Overlamination is not required, though pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are compatible where prints will be handled or displayed in traffic. Rolls run 17 to 60 inches wide on 2- or 3-inch cores. The same base and coating are made in gloss if the job wants maximum contrast rather than a controlled reflection.
