Dietzgen 435 is a 24 lb (90 gsm) uncoated production bond, 4.7 mil thick and matte. It sits one step above the 20 lb sheet that most CAD plotting runs on, and the extra weight buys two things you can measure: more caliper under the hand, and higher opacity — 91% against 88% on the 20 lb bond.

Opacity is the reason a heavier bond gets specified for a set that will be presented rather than filed. At 91% there is less show-through from the sheet behind, which matters when drawings are flipped through in a bound set. Brightness measures 91. The surface takes pen and pencil, so redlines and field marks go directly onto the print, and the sheet is compatible with common stapling and binding equipment.

Ink compatibility

Dietzgen rates 435 BEST for toner and BEST for HP PageWide. Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. It is a line-work paper before it is a colour paper: one stocked roll will serve a mixed fleet, but the surface is tuned for toner adhesion and PageWide output.

Working with it

Overlamination is not required. Pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are all compatible where prints need extra protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture. 435 is stocked in both forms — rolls from 11 to 48 inches wide on 3-inch cores, and cut sheets from 11 to 22 inches. If the drawings are going straight into a flat file, the 20 lb bond does the same job with less weight on the rack; 435 earns its place where the prints get handled.
