ABAQA 9 Mil Water-Resistant Backlit is a translucent film built on a 100% polyester base — 9 mil thick, 275 gsm, with a matte face. It exists to do one job properly: carry an image that is lit from behind, where an ordinary opaque print simply goes dark in the fixture.

ABAQA lists compatibility with both LED and fluorescent lighting, and covers sidelit as well as fully backlit fixtures. The polyester base is water resistant, which is the second half of the product name and the reason it is specified where a paper-based display stock would not hold up.

Ink compatibility

This is an aqueous and latex backlit film, and the ratings say so cleanly: BEST for aqueous dye, BEST for aqueous pigment and BEST for latex. In the vendor’s own description it lets anyone with pro-model aqueous inkjet or latex printers produce backlit graphics. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not among its rated chemistries, so a solvent shop should be looking at a different backlit stock.

Working with it

Lamination is optional but ABAQA is specific about how to do it: pressure-sensitive laminates can be applied to increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image, and the image should be allowed to dry for a full 24 hours before the laminate goes on. Rolls run from 36 up to 60 inches wide on 2-inch cores. Whiteness is rated at 89.64 CIE.
