ABAQA 5 Mil Water-Resistant Self-Adhesive Vinyl is a calendered, adhesive-backed vinyl at 5 mil with a matte face and a solvent acrylic adhesive. ABAQA states the white point is what enables bright, colourful photographs to be printed on a durable, weather-resistant surface — and the measured figures support it: 97 brightness, 90% opacity, 120 CIE whiteness.

The first entry is ABAQA’s own phrasing and it is the whole proposition. Outdoor adhesive vinyl has historically meant a solvent press; this material puts that work within reach of an aqueous plotter, which is why a shop with only aqueous machines specifies it.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable are not rated for this vinyl. The adhesive is solvent acrylic — that describes the glue, not the printing chemistry, and the two are easy to confuse when reading the datasheet quickly.

Working with it

ABAQA publishes a clear durability figure, which is rarer than it should be: graphics printed on this material last up to eight months outdoors without lamination, and up to two years outdoors when laminated. That is the number to plan a campaign around. Lamination is otherwise optional — pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image and can change the gloss level, and the image should dry for 24 hours before the laminate goes on. This listing is the 60-inch roll on 2- or 3-inch cores; the same vinyl is stocked in a 24 to 42 inch band under a separate listing.
