ABAQA 3 Mil Fusion Finesse Polypropylene Laminate is a clear, semi-gloss co-polymer laminating film at 3 mil. It is the thin, general-purpose member of ABAQA’s laminate range, and the vendor states its purpose plainly: it lets a shop produce a wide range of graphics economically on less costly cold-roll laminators rather than requiring heated equipment.

At 3 mil this film protects a print without stiffening it, which is exactly what a banner stand needs — the graphic still has to retract into a cassette. The rigid 15-mil polycarbonate and co-polymer laminates in the same family do the opposite job, turning a print into a panel. Match the laminate to whether the finished graphic has to roll or has to stand.

Ink compatibility

Ratings describe the prints this film goes over. Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and solvent are each rated BEST; UV-curable and eco-solvent are rated compatible. One roll therefore covers the output of most of a mixed shop.

Working with it

ABAQA’s cure guidance for this film is the most detailed in the range, and it is worth following. Before lamination, the finished print must dry for a minimum of 24 hours. After the laminate is applied, the panel should lie flat for at least two hours before cutting, trimming or rolling — and ideally a full 24 hours. Rushing either step is what produces edge lift and tunnelling on a banner stand graphic weeks later. Supplied in 51-inch rolls on 3-inch cores.
