ABAQA 230gsm Special Matte Photo Paper is a 9.5-mil, 230 gsm matte sheet on a 61 lb neutral-white base. Two things separate it from ABAQA’s 200 gsm matte. First, the white point: ABAQA states the neutral white gives these prints a warm fine-art look rather than the cool poster white of the lighter stock, which measures 150 CIE. Second, the base is acid-free, which the vendor ties directly to longer-lasting images when printed with pigment inks.

Décor, photo printing and posters are ABAQA’s stated ideal applications, and the décor listing is the one the acid-free base earns. A print that goes on a wall in a home or a hotel is expected to still look right in five years, which is a different requirement from a retail poster that comes down after a campaign.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. Pigment is the pairing the vendor singles out, because the acid-free base and pigment ink together are what produce the longevity claim. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not rated for this paper.

Working with it

Brightness measures 95 and opacity 98%, so it is a near-opaque sheet suitable for single-sided display without show-through. ABAQA’s finishing guidance is specific: a protective laminate is always recommended after printing, hand-applying a laminate is not recommended, pressure-sensitive or thermal laminates can be used, and the image should dry for 24 hours before lamination. Rolls run 24 to 60 inches wide on 3-inch cores.
