Key takeaways
- A discontinued 42-inch six-color pigment production plotter, still common in the installed base.
- The UV configuration used pigment HP 83 inks for better fade resistance than the dye version.
- The 42-inch width handles E-size and oversize boards a 36-inch machine cannot.
- Printhead and ink supply is aftermarket and thinning โ your parts shelf sets its remaining life.
- No current HP service coverage; downtime recovery is entirely on your own stock.
- For a replacement, look at the HP DesignJet T918 36-in for MFP needs or a current 44-inch Canon for color production.
It’s 4:45 on a bid day and someone’s standing at the tray waiting for a color rendering that has to look right on presentation stock. That’s the job the HP Designjet 5500UV was built for: a 42-inch, six-color production machine that lived in reprographics rooms and large firms through the mid-2000s. It’s discontinued now, but a lot of them are still running, and if you own one you’re mostly here to figure out how much life is left in it.
This was a workhorse for firms that needed both plots and presentation color out of one wide box. The UV designation matters โ it shipped with pigment-based inks for better fade resistance than the dye version. That was the point.
What it actually does well
Two things kept this machine relevant longer than most of its generation. First, the 42-inch carriage swallows E-size and oversize presentation work that a 36-inch box can’t. Second, the six-color pigment setup โ the HP 83 inks with matched printheads โ gave you renderings and coordination drawings that held color on bond and photo stock without going chalky in a lobby window.
It’s a roll-fed production plotter, not a nimble office unit. Feed it a stack of D-size sheets on HP C6019B bond and it earns its footprint. Where it fits:
- Presentation boards and renderings that need fade-resistant pigment color
- Mixed color-and-mono plan sets in a central print room
- Firms already stocked with HP 83 and HP 81 supplies
- Oversize work beyond 36 inches on a single roll
The parts that show their age
Let’s name the failure mode before the feature. This is old hardware. Printheads and ink for the six-color system โ the HP 83 heads and the HP C4940A through HP C5005A printhead range โ still turn up, but the supply chain is aftermarket and thinning. When a head fails at 4:30 on a deadline, your recovery depends entirely on what’s on your shelf. There is no HP service contract riding to the rescue.
It’s a single-carriage design of its era, so mixed-size collation and unattended overnight runs aren’t its strength the way they are on newer boxes. And it draws power and floor space like the production machine it is.
If you’re replacing rather than nursing, the honest step is a modern MFP-class unit like the HP DesignJet T918 36-in when scanning and copy matter more than 42-inch width โ or a current 44-inch production plotter such as the Canon GP-4000 44-in or the Canon iPF8300 44-in if color production is the whole point. Worth a side-by-side: the 5500UV against the iPF8300.

The read
If you already own a 5500UV and it prints clean, keep it running as long as your parts shelf holds and the color still lands. It does a real job: fade-resistant pigment color at 42 inches, which is more than most machines of its age can claim. But don’t buy into this platform expecting long-term support โ the ink and printhead supply is the ceiling on its life. When a head goes and there’s no replacement in the drawer, that’s your answer. Plan the replacement before the deadline plans it for you.

Straight answers
Is the HP Designjet 5500UV still supported by HP?
No. It’s a discontinued model. You’ll rely on aftermarket supplies and third-party service; there’s no current HP service contract for it.
What inks and printheads does it use?
The six-color pigment set is the HP 83 family with matched printheads (the HP C4940A through HP C5005A range and HP 83 heads). The HP 81 dye inks were used in the non-UV configuration.
What's the difference between the UV and dye versions?
The UV version runs pigment inks for better fade resistance, which matters for presentation boards and renderings that sit in daylight. HP offered dye and UV upgrade kits to convert configurations.
Should I keep running mine or replace it?
Keep it if it prints clean and you can source heads and ink. Replace it once parts get scarce โ a modern 44-inch production plotter or an MFP-class HP DesignJet T918 36-in for scanning is the sensible path.
Can it handle full E-size plan sets?
Yes. The 42-inch width covers E-size and oversize boards from a roll, which is its main advantage over 36-inch machines.
What paper does it take?
Standard wide-format rolls including HP bond such as HP C6019B, plus coated, photo and film stocks. Match media to the ink type you’re running for best results.
