HP DesignJet 5000ps

The 5000ps came from an era when a Postscript RIP inside the printer was a real advantage. For firms driving color-heavy work — GIS maps, coordination drawings, presentation boards — that onboard Postscript handled files the plain HP-GL/2 machines choked on. The dye-based HP 81 inks laid down saturated color. The HP 83 UV pigment path, added through the HP UV Upgrade Kit with Ink/60 or the smaller /42 kit, traded some vibrancy for output that survived sunlight and time — the difference between a rendering that fades on the client’s wall and one that doesn’t.

Media support is broad. Bond, coated, vellum, gloss photo, canvas, backlit film — the compatible roll list runs long. For a shop that prints more than just black lines on white paper, that flexibility was the whole point.

Here’s the part nobody prints on the brochure. This is old hardware. Parts availability, printhead stock, and a technician who’s actually seen one before are your real risks — not the spec sheet. Name the failure mode first: a dead printhead on deadline day with no spare in the drawer means the bid set doesn’t ship. Stock the HP 81 and HP 83 heads before you need them.

Single roll, no automatic switching, no modern network authentication, no job accounting to speak of. Mixed-size plan sets mean somebody stands at the machine. If your workflow is high-volume monochrome D-size sets with tight chargeback and IT security demands, this isn’t the tool — a current dual-roll production plotter is.

If you need scanning and copying under one lid, the 5000ps doesn’t do it — that’s MFP territory, like the (now discontinued) HP DesignJet T918 36-in in HP’s own line.
