Expert analysis
Verona 285T is a mould-made 100% cotton rag paper with a textured surface and an archival matte coating. Three things in that sentence carry weight. Mould-made rather than machine-made. Cotton rather than wood pulp. And a coating specified as acid-free, lignin-free and free of optical brighteners — the standard a print generally has to meet before a gallery or an edition will take it.
Limited editions and exhibition prints are the applications that justify the construction. Optical brighteners are the usual reason a bright white paper dulls or shifts over decades; leaving them out is a decision made against the print’s lifetime rather than its first impression. Acid-free and lignin-free cover the other two common routes to a yellowed sheet.
Rated BEST on three chemistries: aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex. Solvent, eco-solvent, UV-curable, toner and HP PageWide are not rated for this paper. Aqueous pigment is the one that matters for the stated applications — pigment ink on a cotton rag base is the standard combination for edition and exhibition printing.
Dietzgen also specifies the archival coating as water resistant, which is worth knowing if prints will be handled or transported before framing. The sheet measures 16.5 mil and 300 gsm in the vendor’s structured data, although the product is named 285 — ask us to confirm the figure with Dietzgen if the weight is contractual for an edition. It is supplied in a single 36-inch roll width on 3-inch cores.
