What you should know

TORINO17M is a premium artist’s canvas on a 1:1 structured base — 17 mil, 340 gsm, matte, finished with Magic’s “Universal” coating. It is the heaviest canvas in the Dietzgen line and the one specified for stretching over fine-art frames.

Stretching is the demanding part, and Dietzgen writes the durability claims to it: the canvas has excellent flexibility for stretching and resists edge cracking when folded, and it is rated tear and scratch resistant as well as water and fade resistant. A canvas that cracks at the bar edge is scrap, and the failure only shows up once the print is already made, so this is the specification that decides the material.

Ink compatibility

Three chemistries carry the BEST rating: aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex. UV-curable is rated GOOD. Solvent and eco-solvent are rated only COMPATIBLE — they will run, but the coating is not built for them. That is the reverse of the GFCVM satin canvas, which is BEST on solvent, eco-solvent, latex and UV and carries no aqueous rating at all. Between the two, an aqueous shop takes Torino and a solvent shop takes GFCVM.

Working with it

The matte face is the traditional finish for reproduction work, where the surface character is expected to come from the weave rather than from a sheen. At 340 gsm and 17 mil this is a substantial material — close to twice the caliper of the heaviest coated display films in the same catalogue — and it wants a plotter comfortable feeding heavy stock. Rolls run 24 to 50 inches wide on 3-inch cores.
