ABAQA 16 mil Water-Resistant Opaque Scrim Vinyl is a scrim-reinforced vinyl banner with a blockout layer built into it. ABAQA is direct about what that layer achieves: it provides 100 percent opacity. At 16 mil and 490 gsm this is the heaviest banner material in ABAQA’s scrim range, and the extra mil over the standard econo scrim is largely the blockout layer itself.

Total opacity matters in three situations, and this list covers all of them: a double-sided banner where two different images must not interfere; a banner hung in front of a window or a lit surface; and a hall where light arrives from behind as well as in front. Where a banner only ever hangs flat against a solid wall, the lighter 15-mil econo scrim at 85% opacity does the same job for less weight.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable are not rated for this material, so confirm your press before ordering — scrim banner is a category where solvent stock is common and the assumption is easy to make.

Working with it

Whiteness is 120 CIE. Lamination is optional rather than required: pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates can be applied to increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image, and ABAQA asks that the image be allowed to dry for 24 hours first. This listing is the 60-inch roll on 2- or 3-inch cores. The same material is stocked in a narrower 24 to 42 inch band under the 3-inch alternate-core listing, so match the listing to the width you actually run.
