ABAQA 15 Mil Water-Resistant Econo Scrim Vinyl is a scrim-reinforced vinyl banner material — 15 mil, 445 gsm, matte. The scrim is a woven mesh laid into the vinyl, and it is what stops a banner tearing away from a grommet in wind. ABAQA states the white point produces photo-realistic images on a durable, weather-resistant surface, which is the combination a banner has to hit: it has to look like a photograph indoors and survive weather outdoors.

Table skirts are the application that tells you most about the material’s hand. At 15 mil and 445 gsm this is a banner vinyl that drapes rather than a rigid display film, so it hangs cleanly over an edge instead of standing away from it.

Ink compatibility

Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment and latex inks are each rated BEST. That covers aqueous inkjet plotters and latex machines. Solvent, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not among its rated chemistries — unusual for a scrim banner, most of which are solvent stock, so check the rating against your press rather than assuming.

Working with it

Opacity is 85%, which is lower than ABAQA’s blockout-layer scrim banners at 100%. For a single-sided banner hung against a wall that is immaterial; for a double-sided banner or one hung in a window, the blockout version is the correct specification. Whiteness measures 120 CIE. Lamination is optional: pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates can be applied to increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image, and the image should dry for 24 hours before the laminate goes on. Rolls run 24 to 60 inches wide on 2- or 3-inch cores.
