What you should know

Key takeaways

  • A discontinued 60-inch aqueous DesignJet still supported by cataloged HP 81 inks, printheads and maintenance rolls.
  • Handles full E-size and long-axis AEC plots at 60 inches without tiling.
  • Supported dye and UV ink paths via the HP Dye and UV Upgrade Kits, covering both renderings and durable field output.
  • Best as a familiar backup or overflow device where a technician can maintain an older platform.
  • Trades away modern speed under load, unattended reliability and current driver polish.
  • For new purchases, current 60-inch pigment machines like the Canon iPF9400 or PRO-6100 are the honest comparison.

It’s 4:15 p.m. The bid closes at five. You’ve got a full D-size set to plot at 60 inches wide, and the machine standing between you and the courier is an HP Designjet 5500. Not new. Not pretty. But if it’s been maintained, it still runs.

This is a remarketed 5500 — a legacy 60-inch DesignJet that spent its working life in reprographics rooms and engineering departments. Nobody buys one expecting the latest anything. You buy one because you need wide output, you know the platform, and you’d rather spend on media than on a new machine.

What this machine actually is

The 5500 is a six-color, roll-fed wide-format inkjet built for the era of aqueous DesignJets. At 60 inches, it handles the full range of AEC output — E-size and ARCH E plans, long-axis site plans, presentation boards, GIS maps. It runs HP 81 inks and printheads, and the platform supported dye and UV ink paths through the HP Dye Upgrade Kits with Ink/60 and HP UV Upgrade Kit with Ink/60. That matters: dye for punchy renderings, pigment-UV for output that survives a job trailer window.

The consumable story is the point of this machine. Ink, printheads, and a long list of maintenance rolls are all still catalog items. If your workflow already speaks HP-GL/2 and you have someone who knows how to swap a printhead, the learning curve is zero.

Where it earns its floor space

The 5500 fits a narrow but real set of jobs. A firm that already owns one and wants a maintained backup. A print room that needs a second 60-inch device for overflow without committing to a new fleet. An operation with a technician who can keep an older aqueous machine honest.

Line quality on bond is fine for engineering plots. Color on coated and semi-gloss — the HP CG462A printing paper Semi-gloss White is on the supply list — is respectable for internal presentation work. What you’re trading away is speed under load, unattended reliability, and the driver polish of anything built this decade. On a big set, older printheads and a single-roll workflow mean more operator babysitting than a modern machine.

How it sits against the alternatives

Be honest about lifecycle. This is a discontinued platform. If you need one printer to cover both wide plotting and reduced-size check prints with a scanner, the smaller in-family HP DesignJet T918 36-in MFP is a different tool for a different job — narrower, but with copy and scan on board.

If you’re weighing a fresh 60-inch machine instead of a remarketed one, the current cross-brand field is where to look. The Canon iPF9400 60-in and Canon PRO-6100 60-in are current-production pigment machines at higher stated resolution. HP rates none of that against the 5500 here — that’s just the class the 5500 competes against now. Worth a side-by-side: the 5500 next to the Canon iPF9400, or check the 60-inch class ranking before you decide.

Canon PRO-6100 60-inCurrent-production 60-inch pigment machine if you're buying new instead of remarketed.HP DesignJet T918 36-inNarrower in-family MFP with scan and copy — a different job than the 5500.

The read

The 5500 is a specialist buy, not a default. It makes sense when you already run the platform, you have a tech who can maintain it, and you want wide output without a new-fleet decision. As your only plotter facing daily deadlines, a current machine like the Canon iPF9400 60-in will spare you the babysitting. As a maintained second device or a familiar workhorse with a live supply chain, a remarketed 5500 still does the job. Bottom line: buy it for the workflow you already have, not the one you’re building toward.

Questions

Straight answers

Is the HP Designjet 5500 still supported for consumables?

Yes — HP 81 inks and printheads, plus a long list of maintenance and media rolls, remain on the supply catalog. That live supply chain is the main reason to consider a remarketed unit.

Can it print durable, water-resistant output for the field?

The platform supports a pigment-UV path through the HP UV Upgrade Kit with Ink/60. That’s the route to output that holds up in a job trailer rather than dye prints better suited to indoor presentation.

How does it compare to a new 60-inch machine?

It’s a discontinued platform. Current cross-brand 60-inch machines such as the Canon iPF9400 60-in or Canon PRO-6100 60-in are pigment systems at higher stated resolution. Choose the 5500 for familiarity and supply access, not for keeping pace on large production runs.

Is there an in-family machine with scanning and copying?

The 5500 is plot-only. If you need scan and copy on board, the narrower HP DesignJet T918 36-in is an in-family MFP — a different tool at 36 inches rather than a wider replacement.

Who should actually buy a remarketed 5500?

Firms already running the platform who want a maintained backup or overflow device, and operations with a technician comfortable servicing an older aqueous DesignJet. As a sole deadline-critical plotter, a current machine is the safer call.
