What you should know

Dietzgen 437 is the 24 lb (90 gsm) weight in Dietzgen’s FIBERLOCK treated bond range — 4.5 mil, matte, 92 brightness, 90% opacity. FIBERLOCK is a surface treatment aimed squarely at static-head inkjet presses of the HP PageWide type, and 437 is the version of it with more body under the ink.

Dietzgen’s stated gains from the treatment are specific to static-head technology: improved ink adhesion, print quality, line acuity and image clarity, richer blacks and brighter colours while using less ink, and less curl and cockling — all without sacrificing print speed or colour accuracy. The heavier 24 lb base helps with the last of those. More fibre means more resistance to the dimensional movement that shows up as cockle when a fast press lays down a heavy ink load.

Ink compatibility

HP PageWide is the only chemistry rated BEST. Toner, aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD. That is the signature of a PageWide paper: it will run almost anywhere, but the treatment only earns its keep on the press it was designed around.

Working with it

At 90% opacity, 437 is a single-sided sheet with slightly less show-through than the 21 lb FIBERLOCK bond. Overlamination is not required; pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are compatible where prints need protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture. It is supplied in roll form only, 24 to 36 inches wide, on 3-inch cores — a narrower range than the 21 lb version, which is stocked from 15 to 40 inches.
