What you should know

PaperTyger 470 is not a coated paper. It is a laminate — a film core bonded between two paper faces — 9 mil thick at 53 lb (200 gsm), matte. That patented construction is the whole proposition: a sheet that prints and writes like paper but resists tearing the way film does, and that lies flat instead of curling. 470 is the heavyweight version; the same construction is made at 4.5 mil and 27 lb.

Everything on that list is a printed piece that gets handled — folded, carried, passed between people, used again next week. Dietzgen also lists certificates among the common applications for the material. At 9 mil and 200 gsm, 470 is the version for pieces that need to feel substantial as well as survive: a menu, a display chart, a map that lives in a vehicle.

Ink compatibility

Toner is rated BEST, consistent with the material’s billing as a laser/inkjet stock. Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, HP PageWide, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD, so it will run across a mixed fleet rather than being tied to one device. It is specified for both roll-fed and sheet-fed equipment.

Working with it

The construction tracks without static or curl, which is what makes it usable in sheet-fed equipment as well as on a plotter. Overlamination is not required; where extra protection from dirt, abrasion and moisture is wanted, the sheet accepts pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates. Rolls run 24 to 36 inches wide on 3-inch cores. Before ordering, check that 9 mil clears your machine’s media-thickness limit — it is a heavy sheet by wide-format standards.
