What you should know

Dietzgen 431 is a 20 lb (75 gsm) uncoated production bond, 4 mil thick and matte, and the number that separates it from the rest of the engineering-bond range is brightness: 96, where Dietzgen’s standard 20 lb bond measures 92. Whiteness is the same 145 and opacity the same 88%, so this is the identical weight of paper made to read brighter under the same light.

The brightness buys contrast rather than durability. On a drawing that is mostly line work with occasional colour fills, a brighter sheet makes the black read blacker, which is worth something on a set that will be presented rather than filed. Everything else behaves like production stock: the surface takes pen and pencil, so redlines and field notes go directly onto the print, and the sheet runs through common stapling and binding equipment when plan sets are assembled by hand.

Ink compatibility

Dietzgen rates 431 BEST on toner and BEST on HP PageWide. Aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, latex and UV inks are each rated GOOD, so it will run across a mixed fleet, but the surface is tuned for toner adhesion and PageWide output rather than for photographic colour.

Working with it

Overlamination is not required. Where prints will be handled in the field, Dietzgen states that 431 accepts pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates for additional protection against dirt, abrasion and moisture. At 88% opacity it is intended as a single-sided print. It is supplied in roll form only, 22 to 36 inches wide, on 3-inch cores — a narrower range than the standard 20 lb bond carries, which is worth checking against your plotter before you switch stock.
