KODAK PROFESSIONAL Satin Photo Paper is a resin-coated (RC) photo paper: 270 gsm, 10.5 mil, satin finish. Resin-coated construction is what makes it behave like a photographic print rather than a heavy coated paper — the image sits on a sealed base. Kodak describes the weight and thickness as comparable to other popular inkjet photo papers, so this is a full-weight photo stock rather than a lightweight stand-in.

The measured base supports that range: CIE whiteness above 145 and opacity above 86, which is a bright, near-opaque sheet. The satin finish is the middle option between a gloss that shows every reflection and a matte that flattens deep tones.

Ink compatibility

Kodak rates this paper BEST for aqueous dye and aqueous pigment inks, and states it is compatible with all thermal and piezo inkjet printers using water-based dye and pigment-based inks. That is the whole aqueous photo-plotter category. Solvent, latex and UV-curable inks are not rated for it — Kodak builds separate solvent-series photo papers for those machines.

Working with it

If prints are going to be laminated, pressure-sensitive vinyl laminates carrying UV inhibitors can be applied to increase the fade and abrasion resistance of the image. Kodak is specific about the timing and the reason: allow the image to dry for 24 hours first, because residual solvent trapped beneath a laminate through insufficient dry time can cause colour shifts. Supplied in 60-inch rolls on 3-inch cores.
