Overview

A durable-signage workhorse for AEC shops — not your blueprint plotter

Let’s be clear about what this is on the shop floor. The HP Latex 335 Print & Cut Plus is a wide-format Latex printer bundled with a cutter — a two-device solution for producing durable, color output. It runs Latex ink at up to 1200 x 1200 DPI, and the box ships with a take-up reel, edge holders, printer stand and HP SAi Flexi RIP Basic. That last part matters: this is a print-then-cut workflow for signage, site graphics and high-durability renderings, not a plan-set machine.

Rated 538 ft²/hour

Where it earns its keep in AEC:

  • Site signage and jobsite boards that live outdoors and take weather
  • Durable presentation renderings and mounted display graphics
  • Color banner and vinyl output where prints-plus-cut in one workflow saves a step
  • Firms that already do enough signage to keep a dedicated device busy

Here’s the honest line: this is not your blueprint tool. It does not scan, it does not copy, and it doesn’t stack collated plan sets. For bid sets, permit sets and as-builts, you want a DesignJet-class technical plotter, not this. Note also that HP has discontinued the Latex 300 series — the 335 lives on in the installed base, with HP committing to service, parts and consumables for a minimum of five years from late-2024 discontinuation, placing end-of-support around late 2029.

Expert analysis

What you should know

Key takeaways

  • A 64-inch color Latex signage printer, not a technical plan plotter.
  • Latex ink cures dry and low-odor, suiting graphics hung in occupied offices.
  • Six inks including light cyan and light magenta favor photographic and rendered output.
  • HP rates it at 91 m²/hr, but real throughput drops after loading, curing and cutting.
  • Uses HP 831 inks in 775-ml cartridges and HP 831 printheads with a user maintenance kit.
  • Best paired with a dedicated plotter for firms that also produce bid sets and as-builts.

Let’s be clear about what the HP Latex 335 is before an architect gets the wrong idea: this is a 64-inch color signage and graphics printer, not a plan plotter. It lays down HP Latex ink — six colors across six printheads — on banner and roll media up to 64 inches wide. That makes it a display and presentation machine, not the box you feed a 200-sheet permit set into on a Tuesday morning.

Where it earns its floor space in an AEC shop is the front-of-house work: site banners, jobsite signage, large presentation boards, rendered elevations, GIS and coordination maps that need to look good on a wall. Rated speed gets you one banner. Media handling gets you the wall covered by Friday.

What it actually is

Latex ink is water-based and cures with heat, so prints come off the roll dry, low-odor and ready to handle. For a construction office that hangs graphics in occupied lobbies or client spaces, that matters — no solvent smell, no long off-gassing wait. HP rates the machine at 91 m²/hr in normal quality, but that’s a rated pace, not a finished-job number. Add roll loading, cure time on the takeoff, and cutting, and your real throughput per shift lands well below the headline.

Six inks — black, cyan, light cyan, light magenta, magenta and yellow — give you the light colors that keep gradients and rendered skies smooth. That’s a graphics color set, tuned for photographic and presentation output, not the crisp monochrome linework of a technical plot.

Media handling is the real review

On a wide-format graphics machine, the printer is the easy part. The roll workflow is where a shift is won or lost. The 335 takes rolls up to 9.84 inches in diameter and media up to 0.02 inches thick, on 2-inch or 3-inch cores via the HP Series 300 64-in spindles. Watch three things on the shop floor: how fast an operator swaps a spent roll, how flat the media lands after curing, and edge quality on cut. HP offers a HP Latex 54 Cutting Solution and HP Latex 64 Cutting Solution if you want to add cutting to the line, plus the HP Series 300/500 Edge Holder Kit for media that wants to curl at the edges.

Consumables are straightforward: HP 831 Latex inks in 775-ml cartridges and the HP 831 printheads, with the HP Latex User Maintenance Kit for scheduled upkeep. Big cartridges mean fewer interruptions on long runs — good for a small shop that can’t staff a full-time operator.

Where it fits — and where it doesn’t

This machine fits AEC firms that produce their own presentation and site graphics and want to stop outsourcing banners and boards. It’s the front-of-house color engine, not the technical plotter. If your daily reality is bid sets, redlines and as-builts on bond, this is the wrong tool — you want a dedicated plan plotter for that linework, and you’d keep the 335 alongside it, not instead of it.

Shopping the same 64-inch graphics class, the obvious cross-brand comparisons are Epson’s resin and dye-sub lines. Weigh it against the [[product:87087161|Epson SC-R5000 64-in]] resin printer or, on the eco-solvent-alternative side, the [[product:110096398|Epson F9470 64-in]]. Run a [[compare:33319259,87087161|side-by-side on ink chemistry and media handling]] before you commit — and check the [[leaderboard|full 64-inch class ranking]] to see where each lands.

The HP Latex 335 is a solid, low-odor color signage machine that belongs in an AEC shop doing its own banners, boards and rendered display work — not in the plan room. The Latex chemistry means dry, handle-ready prints and no solvent airing-out, which is a real advantage in occupied offices. Ask three things before you buy: what feeds it (your media mix and roll-swap tempo), what finishes it (cutting and curl control), and who fixes it (local Latex service coverage). Get honest answers on all three and the small-shop math works. Skip it if all you print is monochrome linework.

Questions

Straight answers

Can the Latex 335 print my construction drawings and plan sets?

It can put ink on paper, but it’s built for durable color signage and graphics, not plan-set production. It won’t scan, copy or stack collated sets. For bid sets, permit sets and as-builts, a DesignJet-class technical plotter is the right tool. Keep this machine for site signage and mounted renderings.

Is it a single machine or two devices?

It’s a two-device solution: a Latex printer plus a separate cutter, driven through the bundled HP SAi Flexi RIP Basic. Plan floor space and workflow for both. The three questions to ask: what feeds it, what dries it, who cuts it — and the answer here is a roll, Latex heat-cure, and the paired cutter.

It's discontinued — can I still get ink and parts?

Yes. HP discontinued the Latex 300 series in late 2024 but committed to service, spare parts and consumables for a minimum of five years, putting end-of-support around late 2029. If you own one or buy into the installed base, you have a supported runway — just plan your replacement before that window closes.

Which inks and printheads does it use?

It’s a nine-cartridge Latex system. Compatible consumables in our catalog include HP 831, HP 871 and HP 881 ink, printhead, optimizer and maintenance families. Confirm the exact family your unit is configured for before ordering, since printhead families differ across the range.

Does it handle white ink?

Its printing colors include white alongside black, light magenta and yellow, so white-ink work is on the table. If your signage needs opaque white on clear or colored media, this matters — verify your ink loadout and RIP settings support it for the substrates you run.

Is it energy-hungry for an office print room?

It’s ENERGY STAR certified and sips power at rest — roughly 2.5 W in sleep and 0.25 W off. Operating draw during curing is higher, as with any Latex device. For a shop already running production gear, it’s a reasonable fit; small offices should weigh the footprint and the dual-device workflow first.
