It’s 4:45 on a bid day. Somebody needs a set of D-size plans and a color rendering for the lobby wall, and they need both before the courier leaves. The HP DesignJet 5000ps UV was built for exactly that kind of split personality: line-work plotter by day, presentation printer when the pitch matters.
This is an older machine. You’ll find it in reprographics rooms and larger AEC shops that bought into it years ago and kept it running. If you’re looking at one today, you’re almost certainly evaluating a used unit or keeping an installed one alive — so the real questions are about consumables, service and whether it still earns its floor space.

What it actually does well
The draw here was always the UV pigment path. With the HP UV Upgrade Kit with Ink/42 or the larger HP UV Upgrade Kit with Ink/60, the 5000ps could produce color output meant to hold up longer than standard dye work — useful when a rendering or a color-coded coordination drawing needs to survive a job-trailer wall or a client’s office.
Media range is the other strength. This machine feeds a long list of surfaces: bond and coated for everyday plots, HP Vellum Paper for reproducibles, and photo and satin stocks like HP Premium Instant-dry Satin White and HP Photo Imaging Gloss White for presentation boards. Backlit film and canvas are in the compatible list too. That flexibility is why it landed in shops that print more than just plan sets.
Where it doesn't fit anymore
Be honest about the age. The HP 83 ink and printhead architecture is a generation behind current DesignJet plumbing, and the six separate printheads plus their cleaning routine mean more operator attention than a modern cartridge-and-integrated-head machine. Budget time for maintenance, not just printing.
There’s also no scanner or copy path on this unit. If your workflow leans on scanning redlines, copying as-builts or handling walk-up jobs, you want a multifunction machine instead. The discontinued HP DesignJet T918 36-in is the in-family reference point for an MFP-style workflow — see the side-by-side if scanning is on your list.
And color longevity is a want, not a need, for a lot of AEC shops. If you print monochrome plan sets all day and rarely touch a rendering, the UV upgrade is spend you won’t recover.

The 5000ps UV made sense for a shop that needed both plan output and durable color from one floor-standing machine, and its media range still earns respect. But it’s an older platform with a printhead-heavy maintenance load and no scanning. Keep one running if it’s paid for and your operator knows its habits. If you’re buying fresh, or you need scan-and-copy, look at a current or MFP-capable model instead — the UV color trick isn’t worth an aging platform unless presentation work is a real, recurring part of your day. Bottom line: a capable veteran, best kept in service rather than newly acquired.
