Analyst take

A 17-inch desktop color printer for renderings, boards and presentation output — not a plan plotter.
Prints at up to 2880 x 1440 DPI, fine enough for detailed color and small callout text on quality media.
No scanner and no color copy — it does not replace a print-room MFP.

Key takeaways

A 17-inch desktop color printer for renderings, boards and presentation output — not a plan plotter.
Prints at up to 2880 x 1440 DPI, fine enough for detailed color and small callout text on quality media.
No scanner and no color copy — it does not replace a print-room MFP.
Deep media support including Epson photo rolls and Premium Canvas Satin for stretched presentation pieces.
Connectivity is dated: one USB 2.0 port and a FireWire port with legacy OS drivers — plan network attachment with IT first.
ENERGY STAR rated at 59 W typical draw, so it's easy on the office panel.

Somebody in your office needs a color rendering, a presentation board, or a marked-up sheet that actually reads at arm’s length. The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 is the machine that sits in the corner and does that job. It’s a 17-inch desktop wide-format photo and proofing printer, not a plan plotter, and knowing that difference saves you a lot of grief before 5 p.m.

Think of it as a studio color device. It handles roll and cut-sheet media, prints at up to 2880 x 1440 DPI, and lives on a desktop or its own cabinet. What it does not do is spit out D-size bid sets by the ream. Keep that framing and this machine makes sense.

What it's genuinely for

The 4000 earns its keep on color output where quality matters more than volume. Renderings. Marketing boards. Site-context imagery. Color-coded coordination sheets you want to hand a client, not a field crew. At 2880 x 1440 DPI on the right media, fine linework and small callout text hold up under scrutiny.

Media choice is where this platform is deep. It runs Epson glossy and semigloss photo rolls, the Epson Traditional Photo Paper, 17″x 15m, and canvas like the Epson Premium Canvas Satin, 17″ x 12.2m, 350g/m² for stretched presentation pieces. For color management, Epson Stylus RIP Pro gets you tighter control than the stock driver. If your color accuracy standards are strict, read how we handle measured color on our ICC and color hub.

Where it will frustrate you

This is a 17-inch machine. It will not produce a 30×42 sheet, and it was never meant to. If your daily reality is permit sets, as-builts, and redlines going out the door in stacks, this is the wrong tool and you’ll resent it by the second deadline. There’s no scanner and no color copy function, so it doesn’t replace a print-room MFP either.

Connectivity is dated: one USB 2.0 Type-A port and a FireWire (IEEE 1394) port, with driver support listed for Windows XP-era and older Mac OS. On a modern locked-down network, plan for how IT will actually attach and share it. That conversation should happen before purchase, not after. See how we weigh this against alternatives on the class leaderboard.

The honest alternative for high-volume monochrome plan production isn’t in this family — you want a dedicated roll-fed plan plotter, described here qualitatively because we don’t stock a direct in-family neighbor to name.

Estimate output time for your typical color job. Remember: first sheet out and media handling matter more than the rated figure at 4:45 p.m.

Computed from the manufacturer's rated 143 ft²/h. Real-world mixed sets run slower — treat this as a best case for comparing machines, not a promise.

The read

The Stylus Pro 4000 is a color quality tool. Buy it for renderings, boards, and presentation-grade color on 17-inch media, and pair it with Epson Stylus RIP Pro if color accuracy is non-negotiable. Do not buy it to run plan sets — it’s the wrong width and there’s no scanner. And budget a real conversation with IT about that USB-and-FireWire connectivity before it lands on the loading dock. Right job, right machine. Wrong job, daily headache.

Graded on a curve against the best published spec among the wide-format printers we track — 100 = the catalog’s gold standard for that metric (the finest droplet, the longest warranty, the fastest rated speed actually on the market). Every input is a manufacturer-published spec; rated speeds are shown as listed, not timed throughput. Ticks mark the class best. How we grade →

Questions

Straight answers

Can this print full-size architectural plan sheets?

No. The 4000 handles media up to 17 inches wide, so it can’t produce D- or E-size sheets. For plan-set volume you need a dedicated roll-fed plotter.

Does it scan or copy?

No. There’s no scanning and no color copy capability. It’s an output-only color printer, so it won’t replace a wide-format MFP in your print room.

How does it connect to a computer or network?

It has one USB 2.0 Type-A port and a FireWire (IEEE 1394) port. Listed driver support covers Windows 98 through XP and older Mac OS, so confirm with IT how it will attach and share on your current network before you buy.

What media can it run for presentation work?

It supports Epson glossy and semigloss photo rolls, Epson Traditional Photo Paper 17″x 15m, and Epson Premium Canvas Satin at 350g/m² for stretched boards, among many others.

Do I need a RIP for color-accurate output?

The stock driver works, but Epson Stylus RIP Pro gives tighter color control. If your renderings must match client-approved color, the RIP is worth adding.

How much power and space does it need?

It’s ENERGY STAR rated with a typical draw of 59 W, and measures 33.4 x 30.1 x 13.9 inches. At 83.8 lbs it’s a two-person lift onto a desk or the optional Epson Cabinet Stand.
