The difference between a gloss poster paper and a true photo paper is construction. A photo paper is built on a resin-coated base that seals the fibre; a poster paper is a coated paper. In practice that shows up in handling and in how the surface behaves under a light rather than in the first impression of the print.
Ink compatibility
This is the specification to read carefully before ordering. Toner is rated BEST, latex is rated GOOD and UV is rated GOOD. There is no rating on file for aqueous dye, aqueous pigment or HP PageWide inks. That is an unusual profile for a gloss poster stock, and it points the paper at toner and roll-to-roll latex or UV production rather than at an aqueous photo plotter. If your posters come off an aqueous machine, Dietzgen’s microporous photo papers and its satin universal poster paper are the products rated for that side of the shop.
Working with it
Overlamination is not required. Where a poster will be handled or displayed in traffic, pressure-sensitive, heat-assist and thermal overlaminates are all compatible and add protection against dirt, abrasion and moisture. Rolls are stocked from 36 to 42 inches wide on 3-inch cores. One note on the published data: Dietzgen’s own summary line for this product gives the caliper as 7.5 mil, while the datasheet and the specification table both say 8 mil. We have used 8 mil here.
