What you should know
Dietzgen 494/1394 is a 4-mil polyester (PET) drafting film, matte-coated on both faces, for toner devices. It is the double-matte, heavier sibling of Dietzgen’s 3-mil single-matte drafting film, and it carries the same engineering brief: survive the large-document copier, and survive the archive.
What Dietzgen 4mil DM Engineering & Drafting Film (494/1394) is used for

Dietzgen states that the film is specially formulated and treated to minimise the shrinkage, distortion and static that high temperatures in large document copiers can cause — the failure modes that put a drawing out of register or jam a machine mid-run. Being matte on both faces means either side takes pencil and ink, and Dietzgen is explicit that changes, corrections and notations can be made and then erased. That is the working definition of a drafting film as opposed to a print film.
Ink compatibility
Toner is the only rated chemistry and it is rated BEST. No rating is on file for aqueous dye, aqueous pigment, HP PageWide, latex or UV. Dietzgen’s inkjet films are separate products with their own coatings, so this is not the roll to load into an aqueous plotter.
Working with it
At 34% opacity the film is translucent and serves as a reprographic intermediate as well as a finished drawing. The PET base is dimensionally stable and both tear and water resistant, and Dietzgen states it will not yellow or fade with time or due to ozone exposure. It is stocked in both forms: rolls from 11 to 48 inches wide on 2- or 3-inch cores, and cut sheets from 8.5 to 30 inches.
